September is Fall Prevention Awareness Month

September is designated as Fall Prevention Awareness Month, with Sept. 22 named as Fall Prevention Awareness Day.

Falls are a leading cause of injury for older adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control, falls affect us all—whether personally or someone we love or care about. Every second of every day an older adult falls. Every year more than one in four older adults reported falling and about 41,000 older adults die as a result of a fall–that’s 112 older adults every day.

It is important to talk openly with healthcare providers. Tell a provider right away if you fall, worry about falling, or feel unsteady. Have your doctor or pharmacist review the medicines you take, even over-the-counter medicines. As you get older, the way medicines work in your body can change. Some medicines, or combinations of medicines, may contribute to falls. Other tips:

Remove tripping hazards: Clear clutter from walkways, secure rugs, and install handrails on stairs and in bathrooms.
Improve lighting: Ensure adequate lighting in all areas of the home, especially stairs, bathrooms, and hallways.
Use assistive devices: Consider using a cane, walker, or grab bars if needed for stability.
